In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is the season of wind and, in terms of organs, it belongs to the liver. These elements can affect our bodies and minds, so; 1. If you get angry easily, have headaches due to stress, or feel distending rib pain, you may have “liver fire” or liver energy stagnation problems. To correct this using Chinese Medicine, you can try to eat some bitter tasting vegetables such as bitter melon, or drink Chrysanthemum tea to reduce this liver fire. Also, try to exercise more to encourage movement of energy in your body in order to reduce the stagnation. For a new and effective exercise, try Tai Chi. 2. If spring is your allergy season, and you are suffering from sinusitis, clear runny nose, tears, and sneezing, you may want to wear a mask or considering having an acupuncture treatment. You can also take the herbal formula “Bi Min Gan Wan” to reduce these symptoms and take “Yu Ping Feng San” to correct your immune system’s response to allergens. 3. If you have been treated for allergies before but the symptoms are coming back during this season, now is the time to schedule an appointment: your immune system needs to be readjusted over and over overcome allergies
Summer
Summer is finally here. It is starting to get hot and muggy outside. Most places are running their air conditioning very cold to make people feel comfortable. People are also drinking ice cold beverages after sweating in the heat. However, this sudden exposure to cold may damage your body. You may experience upper abdomen area cramps, a stiff neck, and an increase to your chance of developing arthritis. In Chinese medicine, these symptoms are called “cold invasion”. Additionally, a feeling of heaviness or puffiness in your body is called “dampness” in Chinese medicine. To avoid “cold invasion” and “dampness,” simply: 1. Have your umbilicus (belly button) covered when you go to a cold room or when you sleep. This can help to prevent stomach cramps and diarrhea due to the cold. 2. Do not sit or sleep near a central air register or close to a fan. This can help prevent stiff neck, stiffness of your other muscles, or Bell’s palsy. 3. If you are sweating, you should slowly and gradually enter cold areas and should not wash your hands with ice-cold water. This will help you avoid arthritis in later life. 4. If you feel hot, or sweat a lot, drink hot tea or hot water slowly instead of dumping cold drinks into your stomach. This can prevent you from dampness, feeling heavy and puffy body. It can also help you to lose weight. 5.Sunshine is beautiful. If you have a Vitamin D deficiency, it is good time to have some sunshine. But in order to protect your skin from future disease, please remember to cover yourself with either long sleeve thin shirts and long thin pants or sunscreen when you stay under the sun (such as playing golf, working outside, gardening, etc). Fall
Fall is coming! In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is the season of heat and fall is the season of dryness. These elements can also affect our bodies, so; 1. Try to avoid spicy foods. They can make the affect of fall dryness worse and possibly cause dry stool, dry cough, or other dryness symptoms. 2. Eat more steamed or stir-fried vegetables and fresh fruit (fruit should be eaten at room temperature) to moisten your body and eliminate residual summer heat. 3. Due to dramatic temperature changes, people are easy to catch common colds. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather in order to reduce your chances of becoming sick. 4. Wear an extra layer on your knees if you have arthritis at knee joints. 5. If you have the cold phlegm type of asthma, you should start avoiding cold drinks, cold food, and raw food, all of which increase the coldness in your body and triggers asthma. All these things will help you have a happier, healthier fall!
Winter
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fall is the season of dryness and winter is the season of coldness. These elements can also affect our bodies. To protect yourself:
Do not go out of doors or into a cold room when you are sweating. This will help to prevent cold wind from invading your body, which can result in runny nose, headache, and cough. If you start having clear nasal discharge, feel chills, or experience body aches, drink Ginger Tea to expel the coldness out of your body as soon as possible or come to see a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor for a healing session.
